Beschreibung

Course Description:

This course serves as an introduction to the research field "Artificial Intelligence". This covers both machine learning and rule-based approaches ranging from historically important concepts to the foundations of current algorithms. The main approach is computer science and implementation oriented: The class shall foster a fundamental theretical and practical understanding of a broad range of AI concepts.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will:
1. Be able to decide which class of AI algorithms is suitable for a given problem.
2. Be able to formalize basic problems in order to be solved with AI methods.
3. Be able to use the programming languages Python and Prolog, standard AI libraries, and other tools to actually solve these basic problems
4. Be able to categorize new AI developments and learn about new algorithms and approaches quickly

Prerequisites:

Basic knowledge about programming, logic and algorithms is recommended but there will also be special sessions for people without prior knowledge.

Course Format:

Delivery Method: Hybrid (on-site session with live-streaming and recording)

Type of Contact & Contact Hours:
- Monday 14:15-15:15: Lecture part 1: Concepts
- Monday 15:30-16:30: Lecture part 2: Applications
- Monday 16:45-17:45: Practice session
- Several timeslots from Tuesday to Friday (t.b.a): Additional tutorial sessions led by student tutors

Selection Process: unlimited admission

Assessment and Grading:

- There will be 10 weekly assignments to be handed in individually (no group work). Each assignment has to be passed with at least 50% of the points.
- The assignments serve as admission criteria for exams; they are not graded and do not contribute to the final grade.
- There are two exams, each 50 minutes long, administered as digital exams in the computing center.
- For admission to the midterm exam (26.5.2025, 14-18), 4 of the first 5 assignments have to be passed
- For admission to the final exam (14.07.25, 15-19), 4 of the last 5 assignments have to be passed
- There are make-up exams for both the midterm and final exam on 11.08.2025, 14-18
- The final grade is the grade average of the midterm and final exam grades

Important Dates:

- Midterm Exam Date: 26.05.2025, 50 minutes, several time slots from 14-18
- Final Exam Date: 14.07.2025, 50 minutes, several time slots from 15-19
- Make-up midterm exam: 11.08.2025, 50 minutes, 14-15
- Make-up final: 11.08.2025, 50 minutes, 16-17

Required Texts and Materials or Further Resources:

- All required materials will be provided via this Stud.IP course

Will this class be offered again in the future?

- Yes, every summer term
