Academic Writing in the Empirical Domains of Cognitive Science

Beschreibung

This practical course is an introduction to writing empirical research papers and theses for cognitive science students. The course is set in the broader context of empirical research in an open science perspective and aims to commit students to the ethical standards of academic writing and good academic practice. This course covers:
• Good scientific practice and avoiding academic misconduct
• Academic writing as a scientific practice
• Academic writing processes and writing strategies
• Functions and language of the different parts of a research paper: Abstract, Introduction and literature review, Methods, Results and Discussion / Conclusion
• Challenges to academic writing following the introduction of Large Language Models (LLMs), such as Chat-GPT
The course will be graded on a pass/non-pass basis and students will receive 4 ECTS credits for regular attendance and submission of all homework assignments.
The course is co-taught by Annette Hohenberger (IKW) and Janna Gerdes (Schreibwerkstatt).
Delivery: The course will be conducted as an online course. Sessions will be recorded.
