Beschreibung
Over the past decade, "trans philosophy" has emerged within academic philosophy. In this seminar, we'll ask what trans philosophy is, reflecting that trans philosophy is multifaceted and that trans philosophy takes place under oppressive conditions. We'll read trans phenomenologies, perspectives, narratives, as well as trans ontology, trans epistemology, trans philosophy of mind, etc. Some of the questions we'll explore are What is "trans"? What are gender and sex, and how do they relate to transness? Have formulations of transness changed over time? What is transphobia and how does it work? How do trans and feminist politics relate to trans philosophy? How are trans people represented in society and the media?
The seminar will be primarily text-based and involve lots of in-class discussion and interaction.
Previous knowledge of trans philosophy or trans studies/theory is not required; prior knowledge of feminist philosophy, social epistemology, or social ontology is helpful; however, the seminar aims to be accessible to different levels of prior knowledge.
