This course will provide an overview of theoretical linguistics, with a focus on those subfields that study meaning (semantics and pragmatics). We will start with discussing properties of the the most basic units that spoken languages are built up from: sounds. Then we will move on to discuss larger and larger units of speech: morphemes, words, phrases and sentences, to finally provide an overview of ways in which language users assign meaning to such units in context.
