Philosophy of mind seems to deal with questions and issues that don't seem to be of political concern. It is concerned with the nature of the mind and its relation to the body and the external world. But recent work on political philosophy of mind and the rise of feminist philosophy of mind have challenged the apparent neutrality of philosophy of mind. This seminar will address the following questions: What is political philosophy of mind? Would philosophy of mind benefit from taking political stances, and what would that look like? What is feminist philosophy of mind? How is the mind shaped (if at all)? What do race and gender have to do with the mind?
The seminar will be primarily text-based, with lots of class discussion and interaction.
Prior knowledge of the basics of philosophy of mind is highly recommended.
