Course description:
This study project investigates cases that challenge main stream Gricean models of communication. Specifically, we look at non-cooperative language use, for example how speakers mislead and how politicians communicate vaguely to conceal questionable pieces of information. We will start by discussing theoretical frameworks to model dialog. Then we go through experimental studies that test the role of loopholes in communication. Students will learn to carry out their own web-based experiments on political language use, analyze the data and write up the results. Students should have basic skills in experimenting and linguistics. A prerequisite is that students have a taken a class from the Psycholinguistics/Neurolinguistics group before such as the Introduction to Psycholinguistics or Psychosemantics. This course is also available as an interdisciplinary course and is open to new students. In addition to weekly meetings, we will have further consultation hours in smaller groups.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, students will:

1. have an overview of different theories and methods in linguistics
2. know how to carry out experimental research, consider and improve on methods and statistics
3. have carried out their own experimental study and analyzed it
4. have gained experience in scientific writing

Prerequisites:
Students need to have taken a lecture or seminar with the Psycholinguistics/Neurolinguistics group before. Basic knowledge of experiment design and statistics is required.

Course Format:
· Delivery Method: in person
· Type of Contact & Contact Hours: Tuesday 14-18, (further contact hours for example Wednesday at 9 and on request)
· Selection Process: based on prerequisites

Assessment and Grading:
Students need to do a graded presentation on their research project (25% of grade), write a mid-term report (25%) and a final report (50%). Regular attendance is expected. Students need to read papers and do tasks related to experiment design and statistical analysis each week.
