Beschreibung
[Course Description:]
Neurodegenerative diseases affect the mind and the body. Early discovery of such diseases increase the chance of successful treatment. However, detection is hard and often relies on expensive and not widely available instruments like fMRI scanners. The utilization of more accessible techniques facilitate more wide spread preventive examinations.
In the study project we will examine the potential of computer vision techniques to detect neurodegenerative diseases based on images and videos of patient's organs. It takes place in the context of a newly started BMBF (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung) research project. Participants will have the chance to get in contact with current research activities at our institute.
The study project will encompass practical implementation of ideas and techniques. Participant should possess basic programming skills, some additional background or vivid interest in computer vision and/or deep learning is desirable and will be trained in the project. In addition, participants will learn different aspects of team working, cooperative coding as well as project management skills.
[Learning Objectives]
By the end of this course, students will have:
1. experience in organizing group work and tools that help in collaborative work
2. acquired essential concepts from computer vision and especially video processing
3. practical experience in applying techniques, including deep learning methods, to real-world data
4. insight in applying computer vision techniques to problems from the medical field
[Prerequisites]
* some basic coding skills, as taught in any introductory programming course (hard requirement)
* experience in some deep learning framework, e.g., from the ANNs with TensorFlow course (soft requirement)
* some ideas of basic computer vision concepts, e.g. from the Computer Vision lecture (soft requirement)
* some background or interest in the medical domain (optional)
[Course Format]
* Delivery Method: in-person, no recordings or online sessions
* Type of Contact & Contact Hours: regular organizational meetings, Tuesday 14:00-16:00 (attention: project will continue during the semester break!)
* Selection Process: none planned (assuming no more than 15 students are attending)
[Assessment and Grading]
* Written intermediate and final report
* External and internal presentations
* Active participation in meetings
* Organizational activities
* Product development
Attention: grade for the study project is given for two semesters, at the end of the project
[Required Texts and Materials or further Resources]
* will be provided over the course of the project
[Registration]
This is a new study project, which will run over two semester. If you want to participate, you need to attend in both semesters!
