Abstract
The paper consists of the notes of a series of lectures delivered at the Winter School on Geometry and Physics in Srni, Czech Republic. We introduce the basic structures of "brave new algebra" starting with $A_\infty$ spaces and monoids, which are studued in some detail. We then discuss infinite loop spaces and spectra, introduce the new smash product of spectra constructed by Elmendorf, kriz, Mandell, and May. We then indicate applications of the algebra of such gadgets in toplogy and classical algebra.
